Parents

Parents just want you to have a nice career so they can tell their friends something interesting.
I musta had a pretty decent bullshit detector when I was a kid. I always knew when they were lying to me. By the time I was in high school, I was dead set on listening to what everyone thought I should be doing with my life and then almost systematically doing the opposite. They weren't really mean about it. All their typical ambitions sounded so mediocre.
